7 Arrested Over Murder In Suhum

SEVEN youth have been arrested by the Suhum Police in the Eastern Region in connection with the death of Edem Kojo Woyome, a pharmacist at the Suhum Government Hospital, last Friday.

The deceased, Edem Kojo, 28, was reportedly hit with a stick at the back of his neck during a scuffle between two groups who stormed the Suhum Government Hospital morgue. Edem Kojo attempted to separate the fighters and in the process, an unknown person hit him from behind. He collapsed on the spot and was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.

He was confirmed dead on Tuesday morning after his family couldn’t pay the GH¢18,000 required for him to undergo surgery.

Two of the seven suspects were arrested last Friday and put before court on Monday. They were remanded to re-appear on Friday. The five others were busted on Tuesday morning when they stormed the same scene to vandalise property at the taxi rank opposite the hospital.

The suspects are currently in police custody assisting investigations while the police have launched a manhunt to arrest the other suspects behind the murder.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that two groups of mourners from Sowatey and Tetekasom, both villages in the Suhum Municipality, last Friday went to the Suhum Government Hospital morgue to take corpses for burial. The mourners were prevented from entering the main hospital morgue due to disturbance. They then besieged the main hospital gate opposite a taxi rank to wait for their corpses.

According to sources, one taxi driver named Kwasi, who was heading towards the facility on top speed, hit a parked car which belonged to the mourners from Sowatey, infuriating the mourners, who then attacked the taxi drivers at the taxi rank.

In the course of the free-for-all fight, an unidentified person allegedly hit Edem with a stick. The culprit immediately jumped into a taxi and drove at top speed from the scene before the mob could notice what he had done to chase him and arrest him.

Several people were also reported to have sustained various injuries but were treated and discharged at the Suhum Government Hospital.

However, some angry youth, numbering about 15, who are friends of the deceased, on Tuesday morning besieged the taxi rank with the intention of vandalising the taxi drivers’ property and sacking the drivers from the place to avenge Edem’s death.

The taxi drivers quickly called the police who rushed to the scene and arrested the five suspects currently in their custody.

The Suhum Municipal Police Commander, Supt Yahaya Muchiraru, who visited the scene to assess the situation, speaking to DAILY GUIDE, expressed worry over the incident and added that his outfit had started investigations into the matter.

DAILY GUIDE has gathered that security has since been beefed up at the Suhum Government Hospital.
