30th Convocation At UNILORIN


For having successfully conducted her 2013/2014 Convocation Ceremony, accolades have continued to pour-in for the management team, staff, students and the general public affiliate to the of the University of Ilorin led by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali (OON).

In his press-brief at the convocation he titled “So Far So Fine”. Vice-Chancellor, Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali of the University of Ilorin, presentated to visitors to the university its Annual Report, noting that the 2013/2014 session was “academically rewarding and generally successful.”

The convocation lecture as delivered by guest lecturer from the University of Malaysia, Professor Dzulkifli AbdulRasak, President, International Association of Universities (IAU).

In his august lecture titled “INNOVATION: A TRANS-DISCIPLINARY APPROACH”, Professor Dzulkifli AbdulRazak noted that: “Higher Education is the source of inequality all over the world.” Stating that, “you cannot connect the dots by looking backward, you can only connect the dots by looking forward and somehow connect it with the future.” The Don admonished the gathering saying: “the purpose of Education is not just to make comfort for oneself but to make humanity what it ought to be.”

Professor Dzulkifli whose thought-provoking Lecture was inter-sparsed with a welter of praises for the University and its leadership, added that the Nigerian education system is fast catching-up with the world standard.

President Goodluck Jonathan, who for the second year running, has nothing but words of praise for the University of Ilorin, hailed its academic feat, saying: “We appreciate the notable achievements of this University in many areas of its activity. It is gratifying to note that the University of Ilorin has been ranked the first University in Nigeria, the 20th in Africa and No. 1842 in the world in the recently released 2014 University Web-ranking conducted by the 4 International Colleges and Universities (4ICU).”

The President, represented on the occasion by the Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau said: “I want to say that this achievement has been made possible through your focused mission, peace, orderliness and stability within your campus.” He specifically commended the University “for not allowing negative forces from outside to disturb the peace and stability, which this University enjoys”, saying, “I urge you never to waiver in the drive to achieve excellence.” The President assured that his administration is committed to support with adequate funding the educational sector and to tackle youth unemployment within the country.

Projects commissioned by the President includes; the newly completed Researchers’ Lodge, the new faculty of Education complex and Lecture Theatre, the ultra-modern Multi-Purpose Hall, the one-in-town Central Research Laboratory, the Metallurgical Science Lecture Theatre as well as a number of Landscaped parking lots.

Executive Governor of Kwara State, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, represented by the state Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Saka Onimago, in his goodwill message congratulated the University on the auspicious occasion and wished her “many happy returns”.

Also, the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius Okojie, represented by Professor Adebisi Balogun, acknowledged the ranking of the University of Ilorin in Nigeria, Africa and the world, saying “it is a sign of great hope for the Nigerian University system.”

Appreciating the successes recorded by the institution in the last two years, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali stated that “the University has the best Chancellor, the best Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, the best Council, the best Senate, the best staff and the best students,” nothing that “having to work with a dynamic team of serious-minded men and women as Principal Officers, Professors and lecturers and staff is indeed a privilege”. Saying that “there is no way one could have gone far without such a formidable team of highly-dedicated Nigerians, including our peaceful and socially responsible students.”
