3 suspected robbers shot; 1 killed, 2 escape

The police in Accra, Friday, shot and killed a suspected armed robber on the Spintex Road. Two of his accomplices, according to the police, are currently on the run.

Joy News reporter Latif Iddrisu who attended a press briefing called by the police after the incident, says, some residents of East Legon and Spintex Road, reported armed robbery attacks there.

Acting on the tip-off, the police said a patrol team rushed to the scene and upon reaching there, encountered the deceased and his two accomplices, making away with a taxi cab they had snatched.

Latif reports the police as saying that the robbers opened fire on them. The police responded, killing one of them in the process.

Two of the suspected robbers managed to escape and are currently being hunted by the police.

The deceased, whose identity was not given, is said to be an ex-convict who came of jail recently.

It is unclear whether he is a beneficiary of the Justice for All Programme – an initiative by the Chief Justice to review cases of prisoners who have been remanded for unduly long periods of time as part of efforts to decongest the country’s prisons.

The police say they are still investigating the matter.
