25 To Contest NPP Elections in Eastern Region

Koforidua, Jan. 13 GNA – Twenty-five people filed their nominations to vie for the top positions of the Eastern Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

All the 25 have gone through vetting and have since been cleared by the regional election committee chaired by the former Minister of Finance Mr Yaw Osafo-Marfo.

The race has become keener and more exciting with the contestants having their campaigns on the doorstep of would be delegates.

The position of regional chairman is being contested by three people including the incumbent chairman, Dr Samuel Yaw Annor, with Mr Yaw Gyekye Amoaben, former regional chairman and Mr Kiston Akomeng Kissi, former Member of Parliament for Akwatia.

The regional secretary position is being contested unopposed by the incumbent, Mr Prince Aboagye with two people battling the deputy regional vice secretary.

The first and second vice chairman positions are being contested by two people each which include Alhaji Omar Bodinga, the incumbent, Nana Addo Boakye, Seth okyere, and Nana Fredua Ofori Atta respectively.

Six people are vying for the regional organizer which include Ike Gyasi Apau, Richard Amofa, Kwame Appiah Kodua, Foster Nti, Nyarko Abronoma and Ahmed Yusif

The regional youth organizer position is also being contested by four people including Kinsley Ofosu Ntiamoah, Baah Mensah, Jerry Osei Mensah and Significantly, even though the NPP is not in power, this year’s race for the regional executive positions has attracted a lot of enthusiastic youth, many of whom have thrown their weight behind the various candidates and are even on their campaign trails, helping to sell the messages of the respective candidates to the delegates.

January 25 2014, delegates numbering about 600 drawn from the constituencies and elders of the party in the region, and the candidates themselves, will come together to elect their representatives to lead the party in the coming years.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, (GNA) in Koforidua on Sunday, Mr Yaw Osafo Marfo described the exercise as very smooth and said that all the candidates who picked nomination forms to contest the various positions had been cleared by the committee except Mr Baah Mensah who is contesting for the youth organizer position waiting for approval from the national.

He said the party needed people who were selfless, committed, dedicated, hard working and have the interest of the party at heart to deliver the agenda of bringing the party to power in 2016.

Mr Osafo-Marfo said it was unfortunate that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government had performed badly, bringing down all the economic gains achieved by the NPP government.

He urged the contestants to conduct their campaign devoid of insults, personal attacks, name calling and anything that could affect the chances of the party in 2016.
