246m boys and girls suffer school-related violence yearly – Research

Research has shown that each year, 246 million boys and girls suffer school-related violence worldwide.

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection revealed this when she launched a 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign .

“According to a research undertaken by the Human Rights Advocacy Centre, sixty seven per cent of students interviewed indicated that sexual comments take place in their school, and forty nine per cent of students reported sexually suggestive touching in their schools,” Nana Oye Lithur added.

She said that school-related violence is one of the worst manifestations of gender discrimination and violates a wide range of children’s rights and affects millions of children and adolescents worldwide.

The Minister stated that education is critical in empowering and transforming the lives of young people, especially girls. She said widespread gender-based violence in and around schools seriously undermines the achievement of quality, inclusive and equitable education for all children.

As part of activities to mark this year’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, the Ministry has set up two gender-based violence centers at the Agbogblosie and Mallam Atta markets, in Accra to deal with violence in relationships.

Mrs. Lithur said the aim of the centers is to offer women and men an opportunity to receive the needed support when subjected to any form of violence.

“These centres, to be replicated in other markets in Ghana will provide comprehensive package of integrated medical, legal and psychosocial support to victims and survivors of gender based violence,” she stated.
